After the digitization of the
Nueva corónica y buen gobierno
manuscript, I planned to update my 1979-80 article with a series of
addenda. Such corrections and modifications were quickly transcended and
gradually grew into a fully independent inquiry. The new essay, entitled “A
Witness unto Itself: The Integrity of the Autograph Manuscript of Felipe Guaman
Poma de Ayala's Nueva corónica y buen gobierno,” is
published on this website. It will
also appear in print in Fund og Forskning 2002.
While most of the contents of my 1979-80 essay are still current, readers should refer to “A Witness unto Itself” regarding: (1) quires, watermarks, and bindings of the manuscript; (2) the date of its composition; (3) the possibility of a missing chapter; (4) the 1936 facsimile reproduction of the manuscript; and (5) the biography of Guaman Poma.
