22. Unique emblem book. Georgette de Montenay. 1567.
Georgette de Montenay, who lived from 1540-1607, belonged to a small group of French female poets and Calvinists. Her Emblemes ou devises chestiennes were until recently only known in editions from 1571 and later, although the printing privilege here is dated 1567. It has been maintained that it could well happen that a book approved for printing, would have had to wait four years before actually being printed and arriving on the market. But The Royal Library's unique copy, Lyon 1567, which is in fact the real first edition, refutes this assumption.
