Pagination Survey of Copenhagen, Royal Library, GkS 2232 4to

By Ivan Boserup (Det Kongelige Bibliotek) and Rolena Adorno (Yale University)

This survey of the pagination of Felipe Guaman Poma de Ayala’s El primer nueva corónica y buen gobierno has been prepared to accompany the Royal Library’s digitized edition of the autograph manuscript. It presents Guaman Poma’s original pagination and his subsequent attempts to correct it after he discovered errors of inscription and/or added new sheets to the completed manuscript. The notes that accompany this survey call attention to these events and point out where they occur in the manuscript.

The bolded page numbers in the first column refer to the "actual" or modern standard pagination that was introduced in the Murra/Adorno print editions (1980, 1987). It was used in the Royal Library's manual pagination of the manuscript in 2000 and reproduced in the digitized edition on this website. Starting on the verso of the title page (here numbered "0"), this pagination corresponds to Guaman Poma's, up to actual page 155. (On actual page 156, he made his first pagination error, repeating the number 154.)

The non-bolded page numbers in successive columns from actual page 156 onward are those inscribed by Guaman Poma, whether he paginated once, twice (from actual page 1004), or three times (from actual page 1140). The only exceptions are numbers 962b and 962c, which were added by a later hand. Wherever Guaman Poma ultimately superimposed two or three numbers, the reading is difficult, both in the digitized edition and in the 1936 Paris print facsimile; in the latter, traces of Guaman Poma's prior inscriptions were painted out in order to make his highest (and latest) page numbers appear as clearly as possible.  Many modern scholarly works based on the Paris 1936 facsimile or copies thereof refer to these page numbers, sometimes erroneously calling them "folios," that represent Guaman Poma's final though still faulty pagination.

Page numbers in italics in the far right-hand column present our assessment of Guaman Poma's intended pagination. We offer it in those cases where his latest page numbers are either ambivalent or erroneous, often appearing as five-digit numbers, or where he simply left the pages unnumbered (actual pages 1008-1017, 1110, 1120-1123, 1140-1189). Guaman Poma's "numerical misspellings" can be attributed to his attempt to reuse as many elements of the previously inscribed, outdated numbers as possible. Notable instances, readily observable in the digitized facsimile, are actual pages 1008-1017, 1120-1122, and 1140-1165.

When the three sides of the book block were cut uniformly and gilded in the course of rebinding the manuscript in the seventeenth century, portions of prose text and inscribed page numbers were lost. We have supplied the missing digits of these truncated numbers in square brackets.

For a fuller account of the explanations given in the notes below, see Rolena Adorno, "A Witness unto Itself: The Integrity of the Autograph Manuscript of Felipe Guaman Poma de Ayala’s El primer nueva corónica y buen gobierno (1615/1616)," on this website or in Fund og Forskning 41 (2002). For a detailed description of the physical manuscript, see the Boserup/Adorno "Codicological Survey of Copenhagen, Royal Library, GkS 2232 4to - Quires, Sheets, and Watermarks" on this website.

Notes: [6] Guaman Poma began at this point a ten-page correction, probably upon discovering his repetition of the ten-number sequence 523-532; see note [4], above. - [7] The sheet used for pages 1066/1067 (rect/verso) was a late insertion that Guaman Poma did not paginate.

Notes: [8] Pages 1104-1139 constitute Guaman Poma's belatedly added chapter, "Camina el autor." - [9] Guaman Poma did not paginate either the "Tabla de la dicha corónica" or the manuscript's final sheet, pages 1179-1187 and 1188-1189, respectively.
