J. H. Paulli (1809-65) 5. Repræsentanterne for 'Det Bestaaende'
Representatives of 'The Establishment'

"Hvad er nu dette? Galimathias. J.P. Paulli "Now what is this? Gibberish. He is evidently himself prey to an hallucination," Kierkegaard wrote indignantly in his diary from 1851 after having heard Paulli, who had just become Doctor of Theology, preach in the Palace Church on "The Joy in the Holy Spirit." Paulli had been engaged as court preacher at this church at the age of 31, and when he - who since his school days had been best friends with H. L. Martensen - three years later married I. P. Mynster's oldest daughter, his clerical future was secured. Mynster, Martensen and Paulli made up a strong theological triumvirate, and none of them would have dreamed that it would be mainly in connection with Kierkegaard that they would be mentioned today.
