Shmuel Yosef Agnon (1888-1970, Nobel laureate in Literature 1966) was at the beginning of his literary career in 1922. He was also a member of the cultural circles of Germany, as can be seen from these and other letters in David Simonsen’s personal archive. Rabbi David Simonsen (1853-1932) served as chief rabbi 1892-1902, but was also active in numerous philanthropic and cultural organisations. His collection of books and his archive were acquired by the Royal Library shortly before he passed away.
