46. Mercator & Hondius' hand-coloured atlas. Gerard Mercator and Jodocus Hondius. 1636.

This fine atlas Appendix oder ander Theil des Welt Buchs was published by one of the finest map designers of the Netherlands.

The atlas is about 60 cm in height and contains 130 double-paged copper engraved maps. All the maps are beautifully decorated by hand. The binding is of brown leather with the Gottorp coat of arms printed in gold as super ex libris.

The Gottorp Library became Danish booty in 1713 during the reign of Frederik IV, but it was not until the reign of Christian VI (in fact in 1735-49) that the about 10,000 volumes were sent to The Royal Library in Copenhagen.
