As the largest national library in Northern Europe The Royal Library contains millions of objects: manuscripts, books, music scores, globes, photographs, posters, pictures and maps. Very large and precious collections that should be Available for studying today and in the future and therefore be preserved for posterity.

But preservation is costly and although the government has now prepared a far-reaching plan for preservation and although the library over the years has placed great importance on continuous preservation, there is still a backlog of about 500,000 works of national importance. This is why we launch the project Preserve The Past and invite sponsors to help us!

All through 2004 the exhibition - Treasures in The Royal Library - will be open to the public in the Diamond. With its specifically selected books and objects it demonstrates very clearly why it is so important to look after the cultural heritage. Just think if we did not have Karen Blixen's manuscripts, image if the Heart Book with ballads from the 1550s were not intact, imagine if we did not look after Carl Nielsen's handwritten scores?
