37. Photographs of Hans Christian Andersen. 80 original takes. 1854-74.
Hans Christian Andersen became the most photographed Dane of his time. Between the first, now lost, take of him in 1843 to Georg E. Hansen's last takes in 1874, more than a hundred photographs were taken of Andersen.
Andersen often mentions that people encouraged him to be photographed, but he was probably quite easy to persuade. He was very interested in the art of photography, and accounts of visits to photographers and comments on his own portraits appear in may diary notes and letters.
He was a very conscious model - preferred to be photographed seen from the right as he felt that was the more favourable angle. He also preferred to be photographed with curly hair which could be quite difficult when he was travelling or visiting far away from his hairdresser, Minét in Østergade.
