13. Buddhist travelling stories. Late 1800s
The manuscript contains a number of Buddhist travelling stories in Mongolian variations. We see here how Buddhist stories have been transferred into Mongolian conditions in order to make them more realistic and appealing to the Mongolians. It is also a fine example of a typical Mongolian manuscript.
The manuscript was purchased by professor Kaare Grønbech in Tsakhar, Central Mongolia on the Second Danish Central Asian Expedition 1938-1939. Apart from Kaare Grønbech, also Henning Haslund-Christensen and Werner Jacobsen took part in the journey. The expedition brought back a Mongolian book collection to The Royal Library, about 2,000 Ethnographica to the National Museum as well as music recordings for the National Folklore Collection.
The manuscript is in two volumes, written on rice paper.
