This manual of the art of navigating was owned by Danish polar explorer Jens Munk (1579-1628). In the book he made a note that he got hold of it when he plundered the pirate Mendoza’s ship off Kandenes, probably in northern Norway or Russia: “Dene Bog Eier Jenß Munk vdj sin tid och hafuer ieg den bekomet Vnder Kandeneß i Kapten Mendoses skieb den tid wie blef hanom Megtig den 26 Junj Anno 1615” (Jenß Munk Owns This Book in his time and I got it Off Kandeneß in Captain Mendose’s ship at the time we Defeated him on the 26th of June Anno 1615). Jan Mendoza was a notorious Spanish pirate who was captured by Jens Munk in 1615 by order of King Christian IV. Maybe Jens Munk brought the book along on his great expedition that ended at Hudson Bay (for more information on Munk and his expedition see his book Navigatio septentrionalis).
