The great Italian heroic epic by Torquato Tasso from the second half of the 16th century became a modern classic. It is written in the tradition of the classical epics of Homer and Virgil. The topic is the medieval crusades, more precisely the capture of Jerusalem by the Christians during the First Crusade in 1099. The nobleman Laurids Ulfeldt (1605-1659), whose comprehensive collection of books was purchased by Frederik III in c. 1662, owned a copy of this magnificent edition dating from 1644.
