P. 47: Arabic proverbs with a Latin translation |
The study of Arabic gained ground among European philologists in the 16th and 17th centuries. The learned Joseph Scaliger (1540-1609) prepared this edition of Arabic proverbs which was published after his death by Thomas Erpenius. The first owner of the book was Thomas Bang, professor at the University of Copenhagen, and in 1653 he presented it to Joachim Gersdorff (1611-1661), collector of books and rigshofmester (the highest ranking state official). It came to the library of Frederik III in 1661 as part of Joachim Gersdorff’s large collection of books.
