The letter of indulgence with appended seal

Letters of indulgence were printed in large numbers in the first decades after the invention of printing. The buyer of this indulgence (which is printed on parchment) was the Danish nobleman Otto Nielsen Rosenkrantz. The issuer of the letter of indulgence, Marinus de Fregeno, was a papal legate, and the income from his sale of indulgences helped finance the fight against the Turks.

15.3 x 26.5 cm.
