The Parisian printer and publisher Robert Estienne (1503-1559) was appointed printer to King François I of France. Among his many publications was the New Testament in its original Greek language. Above is shown the first edition – also known as the first “O mirificam” edition from the initial words of the book – in two parts, with a preface in Latin by Estienne. It is famous for its harmonious print. Estienne made use of Greek types cut by the French printer Claude Garamond (1480-1561) – the so-called “Grec du roi” types.
This copy is bound in black morocco decorated with gilt margins. On the front cover the super exlibris of the Danish Privy Councillor and collector of books Bolle Willum Luxdorph (1716-1788) is seen (an elephant’s head holding in its trunk a crown pierced by three arrows).
