Shortly after his first journey to America Columbus wrote an account of it in Spanish in 1493. It was soon translated into Latin and was published several times in the 1490’s. This edition from Basel contains various woodcuts. It appears that Columbus himself thought that he had discovered some islands in the “Indian Sea”, obviously not a new continent.
