During the years 1768-1771 James Cook (1728-1779) undertook the first of his expeditions to the South Pacific on board the ship The Endeavour. On this journey he explored, among other places, New Zealand and the east coast of Australia. Among the members of the expedition was the young artist Sydney Parkinson (1745-1771), who died on the return passage. His journals were published by his brother, and they included his drawings that were engraved on copper.
This copy has belonged to the Danish historian and collector of books Peter Frederik Suhm (1728-1798), whose name is printed in gold on the front cover. The binding is made of brown leather. Suhm sold his large collection of books to the Royal Library in 1796 for 2,000 rigsdaler, plus an annual payment.

34.7 x 28.5 cm.
