The Greenland Procession


In this “chest print” the Greenland boys Pok and Kiperok are seen leading a boat procession in Copenhagen. The procession was held for the benefit of the Greenland Company in Bergen, Norway. The two Greenlanders travelled to Denmark to experience for themselves the strange habits there. Later on their adventures in Copenhagen made the basis of a classic story in Greenlandic literature: Pok. kalalek avalangnek, ...
In Danish such popular one leaf woodcuts are called “chest prints” because it was common to paste them into the lids of chests. The pictures are naïve, often strongly coloured, and meant to edify, inform, or entertain.
