Illustrated Mongolian manuscript containing the legend of the pious monk Molon Toyin (in Sanskrit Maudgalyāyana, in Chinese Mulian) who journeys to the underworld in order to save his mother. He passes the Buddhist hells, eight warm and eight cold, where the condemned are punished. The text is a popular Buddhist story meant to discourage people from committing sins.
The manuscript consists of 48 loose leaves. On each leaf, the text is on one side and the illustration is on the other side.
