Pierre Bayle’s famous encyclopedia Dictionnaire historique et critique (1697) is a major work of the early Age of Enlightenment and Bayle’s first draft of his great work, commenced in 1689, is in the possession of the Royal Library.
This early version primarily contains somewhat pedantic corrections of Louis Moréri’s Dictionnaire historique (1st ed. 1674). None of the provocative views of the printed edition are expressed here.
