In 1871 the Danish critic and scholar Georg Brandes (1842-1927) began a series of lectures Hovedstrømninger i det 19de Aarhundredes Litteratur (Main Currents in 19th Century Literature) at the University of Copenhagen. These lectures heralded the Modern Breakthrough which reached far beyond literature. The first lecture dealt with Emigrantlitteraturen (the Emigrant Literature), i.e. exiled French writers during the Revolution and the Napoleonic Era. A draft of part of it is preserved and is shown here.

35.5 x 22.1 cm.
