Department of Maps, Prints, and Photographs, Kbh. top.
Prospect of Copenhagen seen from Christianshavn c. 1650, made by the Dutch engraver Hugo Allard (1620-1684). It is based on an original from the 1620’s. The viewpoint is from Strandgade (a street) towards Copenhagen with the newly erected Børsen (Stock Exchange) to the left (the first tower). The Navy shipyard Gammel Holm is right ahead and the Citadel is still an undeveloped area to the right. Not until 1662 did King Frederik III make it into a fortification. The Sovereign and his Queen, Sophie Amalie, are depicted in the two medallions.
