This daguerreotype of the officer Johan Waldemar Neergaard (1810-1879) was made by the portrait painter Joseph Weninger of Vienna. He established a studio in Copenhagen in 1842 and made, as he wrote to Helsingør Avis (Elsinore Journal) on 20 July, “Daguerrean portraits according to the newest Viennese inventions as well as my own method” as one of the first in Denmark.
The daguerreotype was invented by the Frenchman Louis-Jacques-Mandé Daguerre (1787-1851). The technique is to fix an image on copper plates coated with silver iodide. Each daguerreotype is unique, unlike the photographs of a later age.

8.3 x 6.5 cm.
14 x 10.3 cm.
