Daguerreotype of Caspar Joachim Kühl and his wife Louise.

This coloured daguerreotype was made by an anonymous photographer.
The daguerreotype was invented by the Frenchman Louis-Jacques-Mandé Daguerre (1787-1851). The technique is to fix an image on copper plates coated with silver iodide. Each daguerreotype is unique, unlike the photographs of a later age.
