Daguerreotype of Johanne Luise Heiberg.
Department of Maps, Prints, and Photographs, Dag. 1983-554 8º
This daguerreotype of the actress and writer Johanne Luise Heiberg (1812-1890) was made by Carl Gustav Oehme, probably in 1854 or 1855 when Johanne Luise Heiberg was visiting German spas.
Carl Gustav Oehme ran the biggest photographic studio in Berlin. He had learned the art, which consists of fixing an image on copper plates coated with silver iodide, from its inventor in Paris, Louis-Jacques-Mandé Daguerre (1787-1851). Unlike the photographs of a later age, each daguerreotype is unique.
