Poul Ruders’s opera Tjenerindens fortælling (The Handmaid’s Tale) is a science fiction story that takes place in the year 2195 in the country of Gilead where a fundamentalistic misogynist rule is in power. The opera was requested by the Danish Royal Theatre, which also hosted the first performance in March 2000, and since then the opera has been put on stage at the Minnesota Opera and the English National Opera.
