Fol. 17v: Matthew Fol. 18r: The beginning of the
Gospel according to St. Matthew

Work on this evangelistary was begun in the late 10th century, but was interrupted and not concluded until the beginning of the 11th century. The book originally featured depictions of all four Evangelists, but only two, Matthew and Luke, have survived, positioned directly in front of their respective Gospels. The first page of each Gospel is written in gold.
The book once belonged to the theologian Niels Hemmingsen (1513-1600) and may have been brought to Denmark as early as the Middle Ages.
