The “Roskilde Psalter”. 13th century.
Acc. 2002/100. Parchment, 159 ff.
Binding | Text example | The litany with the names of the three saints Lucius, Knud, and Olav (at the bottom of the 2nd column on the left page) |
This manuscript contains the Book of Psalms, a number of other biblical hymns, and a litany. The small format of the book made it easy to carry around in a pocket, and it was clearly made for private use. Three names of saints which figure in the litany – Lucius, Knud (Kanutus), and Olav – show that the manuscript belonged to a Dane, probably from Roskilde where Lucius was the patron saint.
The small psalter is the most recent acquisition of a mediaeval manuscript made by the Royal Library. It came to the library in 2002 due to a donation from the Carlsberg Foundation.
