Single leaf with the beginning of the 10th book of Titus Livius’ History of Rome translated into French. The illustration depicts the story of the Spartan King Cleonymus who about 300 B.C. attempted to take possession of a coastal area and its hinterland in northeastern Italy. Cleonymus suffered an ignominious defeat. The violent battle scene is framed by a graceful border with vines and creatures intertwined. The leaf comes from a manuscript in two volumes containing Pierre Bersuire’s translation into French of the first two decades of Livy’s work.

45.5 x 34 cm.
