Binding done by the famous German bookbinder Jakob Krause (1531-1585) in the second half of the 16th century. From 1566 he was employed at the Saxon court. His bindings are of an Italian style and often decorated with gilt interlaced patterns like this binding that is made of reddish-brown morocco. In the middle of the covers an armorial ownership stamp is found. The gilt edges have been decorated with gauffered and coloured flowers. The book has woodcut illustrations, several of them coloured by hand.
The book belonged to Prince Elector August of Saxony (1526-1586) (the coat-of-arms on the front cover) and to Anna of Saxony (1532-1585), born a princess of Denmark, the daughter of King Christian III (the coat-of-arms on the back cover). Later the book was incorporated into the library of King Frederik III – the early Royal Library.
