The Globes

The globe is the only correct way of reproducing the Earth’s surface, so globes have been made ever since the realisation that the Earth is round. The oldest known globe to date is the Behaim Globe from 1492 before America was added to the world map.

Globe production had its golden age at the beginning of the 1600s particularly due to the globe production of the Dutch cartographer Blaeu.A globe can only be produced in a limited size, thus limiting the amount of information. This, in conjunction with the cost of globe production, made globes valuable objects. Another factor is that they were often produced in delicate materials such as plaster.

This is a display of a small selection of the library’s globes spanning a period of 500 years, including hand-drawn and printed globes and Earth and celestial globes, which were often produced in pairs.
