The Cartography of the 1900s
|
Map
production experienced a dramatic period of development in the 1900s,
partly due to new production methods, with first airplanes and, later,
satellites as effective tools for gathering information, and partly due
to printing technology, including the development of a number of
completely new printing methods: off-setting, photogravure, digital
technology, etc. The
production of maps increased dramatically and maps became both everyday
objects and highly advanced information media within a number of very
different fields. The
paper map, in its traditional format for more than 200 years, is
replaced by digital maps, which can be produced according to need and
are often designed individually. A
number of different map types from the 1900s reveal the multiplicity of
cartography during the period.
